The Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) provides no-match grants to volunteer/part-time fire departments across the state for personal protection equipment (PPE). This includes bunker or wildland gear (coat, pants, helmet, gloves, hood and boots) and new masks for Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) units for department members. Funding will be available for physicals not covered by the individual's insurance or reimbursed by their department, as well as for the purchase of strategically placed washer-extractor machines throughout the state.
Eligible expenses include:
In FY2020, Kansas Fire Departments received approximately $330,000 to be used for safety gear, $70,000 for 20 washer/extractor machines and $600 for an Explorer Junior Firefighter program initiation and startup fees through this program. These awards can be viewed at https://www.firemarshal.ks.gov/DocumentCenter/View/770/Fiscal-Year-2020-Grant-Awards?bidId=.
2023 award recipients can be seen here: https://www.firemarshal.ks.gov/DocumentCenter/View/1172/Grant-Recipient-List-2023?bidId=
Purchases made before the date of the application are not eligible for reimbursement. Proof of Purchase documents, like invoices, and the Certificate of Expenditure Form must be dated after the date of the application.
Applicants must be an established and recognized Kansas volunteer/part-time fire department in good standing with OSFM on the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) or a volunteer firefighter in good standing with their local fire department.
*The FY 2024 KFSRG will not be using federal dollars as it did last year. Therefore, they will not be requiring departments to register with SAM.gov for a UEI number for this grant cycle.
Applications are to be submitted by 4:00 pm September 15, 2023. A similar deadline is anticipated annually.
Individual award amounts vary. Cost sharing/matching is not required. Funds are distributed on a first come first serve basis until the allotted funds are depleted.
